Coffee Futures Traded a Volatile Session
Coffee futures traded a volatile session today, with arabica leading the action in a trading range of 11.55 cents. Prices steadily climbed throughout the morning on low volume but once again failed to breach the 330-cent mark. Origin sellers were active above 325 cents, capping the market's upside. The heaviest trading volumes occurred just before the settlement window, with the active March 2025 contract closing just below the 20-day moving average. The nearby March/May spread settled at a 3.05-cent premium, marking its lowest close since December 17th.
Robusta lagged tracking the New York terminal for most of the day.
In the physical markets, activity is slowly resuming following the holiday season. Roasters remain largely absent, awaiting further price declines before stepping in. This Friday, January 10th, marks the expiration of February 2025 arabica options, adding a potential catalyst for volatility later in the week.
IHCAFE reported preliminary December 2024 green coffee exports from Honduras at 243,596.11 46-kg bags. This marks a more normal export pace jumping from November 2024's exports of 37,542.48 bags, though it falls short of the 277,979.99 bags exported in December 2023.
