Coffee Ends Lower
Arabica futures were under pressure today. Activity continues to be generated by short-term specs playing both sides of the market. The July position closed 145 points lower at 199.40 cents a pound. With no fundamental news, the action was driven by technical factors. Prices consolidated with support at 192.00 and resistance at 205.00, while oscillators remain with neutral signals. The dollar eased after softer inflation data increases odds for futures interest rate cuts by the Fed, but the Arabica market appears to be shrugging off this factor. Cocoa and sugar, however, recovered modestly. No change in the Brazilian weather forecasts now that harvesting is underway. The peak field work should begin in the coming weeks. Many traders and dealers will meet next week in Santos for the XXIV International Coffee Seminar, where more insight into the 2024 crop will be discussed as well as the future development of the Brazilian coffee sector. Cert stocks increased by 4,755 bags to 740,449 bags. Pending grading were down 5,917 bags to 59,787 bags. A total of 12,345 bags were graded. Passed 4,755 (4,480 BR; 275 PE), failed 7,590 (5,760 BR; 1,280 PNG; 550 PE)
Robusta July contract settled at $3402 -31 with a 3459/3369 range. Market is struggling for direction in an environment with little fresh news. Commercial activity is largely muted with roasters happy to wait patiently below and origin selling virtually non-existent. The bit in between is dominated by algos / spec jobbing the market. This is reflected in the very low outright volumes, less than 7,434 lots traded on the Jul24 contract. Nearby structure continues to operate within the recent range 62/70 on 3k lots. Robusta Nov24 3500/3000 putspread traded 750x @ 270, Robusta Jul24 3300 puts vs 3420Δ36 traded 750x @ 100. Robusta Nov24 2575 put traded 500x @ 56.
